This Tournament transitions from U19 to the first Regional U20 Trophy in line with World Rugby competition protocols. Namibia qualified in 2016 to participate in the 2016 World Rugby U20 Trophy.
This year, Ivory Coast made a resolute comeback to the competition. The
Elephanteaux
replaced Uganda’s team who could not participate following sanction for non-compliance in 2016.
This competition was an innovation of style and content. It pays tribute to man who changed rugby in Africa; Jean Luc Barthes, affectionately known as “the African” passed away in February 2016. Jean-Luc’s priority was always the development of the game in Africa. Rugby Africa perpetuates his work and honours his contribution to the game and, with his family’s consent, Africa Cup U19 has become the U20 Barthes Trophy.
