Uganda Ranks Number One of 2024 Africa Men’s Sevens Cup in Mauritius After First Round

Uganda started off by opening the scoring through an early try by Aaron Ofoywroth who scored in the right corner after beating the defence.

The final was the first of two, with a second tournament, at the same venue, following next weekend.

Madagascar’s handling then probably cost them a possible early equalizer, but from a turnover they lost the ball, and Uganda quickly launched an attack.

In a tournament of good quality, the one problem seemed to be consistent good handling, and Uganda’s greater experience came to the fore in this aspect of the final.

A try by Adrian Kasito converted by the impressive Philip Wokorach, as player and kicker, put Uganda firmly on their way to the title at 12-0.

Madagascar cut the lead to 12-5, but Wokorach then put Ofoywroth through for Uganda’s third try with a well-held pass on the switch for his sides third try, which was converted. The halftime lead was 19-5, but Madagascar closed the gap with a converted try (19-12).

Then Okeny scored for Uganda, stretching their lead to 24-12. They went further ahead when Kisiga scored but the big comebacks that marked the Makis campaign did not materialise and when Kisaga scored again for Wokorach to convert, the score of 31-12 sent the message that the tournament’s best team had won.

  • South Africa took the Bronze medal after a comprehensive win against Burkina Faso, scoring 22 points after halftime in their 35-7 win.
  • Sebastiaan Jobb of South Africa was adjudged the most valuable player at the tournament.
