There can be little doubt about the merit of the winner of the Africa Men’s Sevens title.

Uganda won both tournaments the past two weekends against Africa’s best at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius.

Uganda went through to two- tournaments unbeaten. They won all 12 of their matches and took a little revenge for the defeat against South Africa in the Olympic repechage in Monaco just weeks ago.

Uganda completed the double with a last-ditch score in the final against South Africa, winning 20-17 with the very last move of the day on Sunday, July 7.

It is Uganda’s second win against the South Africans in Mauritius, ousting them 12-0 in the semifinals, last Sunday, July 30.

Uganda took an early 10-0 lead, but the SA ‘A’-side was not to be denied and closed the gap to five points.

Uganda started off impressively on Sunday with a good try near the right corner, then Alex Aturinda doubled it, for a 10-0 advantage.

But the SA ‘A’-side was not to be denied and closed the gap to five points.

Then Joubert Schoeman scored for South Africa with a 50 metres-run to close the gap before Dennis Etwau scored to give Uganda a 15-5 lead.

Live-wire Ricardo Duarttee then scored for the SA team with impressive Sebastian Jobb also dotting down and added a conversion giving his side a 17-15 lead.

It took a smart play from Aaron Ofoywroth following a penalty to Uganda to land the winning try after the hooter had sounded.

• Uganda and Madagascar will be Africa’s two men’s representatives at the 2025 Challenger series to try and qualify for the HSBC SVNS series. Kenya qualified this year and will join South Africa in the 2024/25 HSBC SVNS series.

This concludes the 2024 Africa Men’s Sevens Tournament in Mauritius, showcasing Uganda as a champion of the tournament.
